Between the upcoming release of Alice Hoffman’s new book, The Witches of Cambridge, and Practical Magic 2 coming to theatres next week, it’s going to be an Alice Hoffman fall.
I love Alice Hoffman’s Practical Magic book series, and Practical Magic is my favourite fall movie. I’ve read some of Alice Hoffman’s other books (When We Flew Away, The Dovekeepers, Skylight Confessions, The Invisible Hour, the Once Upon a Time Bookshop stories, and Everything My Mother Taught Me), and one of my reading goals is to read her entire catalogue. This month, my September hopefuls include The Witches of Cambridge as well as two of her older books: The River King and The Museum of Extraordinary Things. I’m hoping to read more of her books in October as well! So for me, it’s definitely going to be an Alice Hoffman fall.
If you haven’t read any Alice Hoffman books, I’d recommend starting with the Practical Magic series. If you’re wondering what order to read the books in, there are two options: in publication order or in chronological order.
If you want to read the Practical Magic series in publication order, which is how I read, it the order is:
- Practical Magic (released in 1995)
- The Rules of Magic (released in 2017)
- Magic Lessons (released in 2020)
- The Book of Magic (released in 2021)
If you want to read the series in chronological order, the order is:
- Magic Lessons (takes place in the 1600s)
- The Rules of Magic (takes place in the 1960s and 1970s)
- Practical Magic (takes place in the 1990s)
- The Book of Magic (takes place in the 2000s)
The series is perfect to read in the fall, so now is a great time to start!
