Elin Hilderbrand’s 28 Summers: My Review

Since falling in love with Elin Hilderbrand’s Winter Street series last December, I’ve been determined to read her entire catalogue. Since most of her books take place in the summer, I’ve been reading a lot of her novels over the last couple of months.

Over the weekend, I finished 28 Summers, my ninth Elin Hilderbrand novel that takes place during the summer. 28 Summers is about a man and woman who decide to spend every Labour Day weekend together at the woman’s Nantucket cottage, no matter what. It follows their lives over the course of 28 years, together and apart.

I knew going into the novel that it was a popular one, but I wasn’t expecting it to become my favourite Elin Hilderbrand novel that I’ve read to date. It surpassed The Five-Star Weekend for me. When I wasn’t reading it, I was eager to pick it back up. I loved the main female character, Mallory. Elin Hilderbrand was able to make me root for both main characters, despite them conducting an affair while the man, Jake, was married. All of the characters were complex and interesting. Throughout the novel, I was intrigued about what would happen next. I also loved that each chapter represented one year and began with a list of what we as a society were thinking about in that year. A Winter Street character even made an appearance, which was a fun addition.

I haven’t made my way through all of Elin Hilderbrand’s novels yet, but it will be tough for any of them to surpass this one as my favourite. If you haven’t read 28 Summers yet, I highly recommend it!
