A Time of Witches by Madeline Martin was one of my most anticipated fall-themed book releases this year. Madeline Martin is a historical fiction author, and I previously read and enjoyed her novel, The Last Bookshop in London.
A Time of Witches is a dual-timeline historical fiction novel. It is about a woman named Lilith living in Savannah who has a recurring nightmare involving being burned alive at the stake. She travels to a manor house in England where she learns about her legacy. If she can’t rewrite history, she will cease to exist. At the same time, the novel is about a woman named Sybil living in 1645 Suffolk who has been accused of being a witch, imprisoned, and tortured, and who fights to protect her younger sister.
I loved this book! It was fast-paced and despite me having read other novels about witch trials, I learned a lot about the witch trials that occurred in 1645 Suffolk. I especially enjoyed the parts of the novel that were from Sybil’s perspective. It was heart-wrenching and infuriating to read about the injustices that women in that time faced. The chapters in this novel were short (I think the longest chapters were about 8 pages), which made it easy to fly through it.
I rated A Time of Witches 4 stars, and I would definitely recommend reading it this fall!
